Microsoft provides web services concept so that anyone can deploy services publically in World Wide Web which is platform independent and possible to access all the functionality on any machine in the world. For example: Flight booking application: so flight company has deployed one web services to provide fight timings and price and any of the consumer web site want to display that fights timings on their site they can get timing and price details by this services.

A Web service is a software system designed to support interoperable Machine to Machine interaction over a network. Web services are frequently just Web APIs that can be accessed over a network, such as the Internet, and executed on a remote system hosting the requested services.
